Getting the first comment on your blog post is what’s required to get a conversion started and it will get you more traffic.

But it can be hard

If you don’t get that first comment in a reasonable time you will probably never get any comments at all. When a visitor reads an old post with no comments he is to be reluctant to be the first one to comment. It’s a bit like a shop that has no visitors. It’s hard work to get the first customer in the door but when you have people in the store that in itself will cause more people to come.

But that’s still not the real reason you want comments.

Comments counts as content for the search engines. The search engines sees a comment added to a page as if the page has been updated with more content ie it has higher value.

Constantly updated pages are going to get more frequent visits by the search engine spiders and are probably going to rank higher in the results. Even if a search engine actually can’t tell it sees new comments it does make sense. A page that is constantly getting more and more added information is relevant and probably up to date.

Btw, did you know that Google does have a human department helping with ranking web pages, its not all just done by computers?

Your signature on the comment

Adding relevant comments on relevant blogs is a source of traffic for you as well when you are allowed to leave your url. People are going to check out your comment and depending on how the blog is setup your link might even count as a backlink.

Yesterday I finished an update to the Site-Hype software that adds blog commenting. We are still giving away free site-hype accounts at our home page so give it a try if you haven’t signed up already. To use the blog commenting enter a user name on the socials page. The user name should be the one you are going to use when you are doing blog commenting for other users. Then when you submit the next time in the program make sure to check the “blog commenting box”

Here is another free Wordpress plugin I recommend and use. This time to help you get more tags on the social sites and more subscribers to your RSS feed.

The idea behind this plug-in is really simply. Check were a visitor is coming from and display a customized message for the visitor.

Say for example you get a guy to visit you from a link on Twitter, this plug-in will let you display a message asking him to re-tweet your link. The message is displayed on top of the blog post with an action link.

Another example, say a girl is visiting you from a search on Google. She will see a message about how to subscribe to your rss feed and nothing about Twitter.

Since you can display a message that is customized for the user and make sense you will have a lot more user actually doing what you want them to.

Compare this to the normal social bookmarking buttons that are often irrelevant, it’s not likely you are going to get a Digg from someone who don’t even own a Digg account.

The plug-in is called greetbox, and you can see it used on all pages on this blog if you click the direct link for a post.

Here are some of the most important features:
•	Show a different greeting message to your visitor depending on the referrer URL. You can add/edit/delete/disable these greeting messages as you choose.
•	Greeting messages automatically get inserted into the top of your posts upon activation. There is no need to modify theme files.
•	Ability to detect the visitor’s search keywords from major search engines and automatically display related posts under the greeting message.
•	Show a default greeting message even if the vistor does not match any of your configured referrer URL.
•	Show a default greeting message even if the visitor does not have javascript enabled.
•	Cache compatible mode makes use of AJAX to display greeting messages in the frontend. This makes WP Greet Box compatible with other caching plugins (such as WP Super Cache) and WPMU.
•	AJAX administrative interface that uses nonce verification to discourage hackers.
•	Currently the following referrers are installed by default, but you can easily create your own if your favorite referrer is not on the list! blinklist.com, blogmarks.com, del.icio.us, delicious.com, digg.com, diigo.com, facebook.com, flickr.com, friendfeed.com, furl.com, google.*, linkedin.com, ma.gnolia.com, mister-wong.com, myspace.com, netvibes.com, newsvine.com, plurk.com, reddit.com, search.live.com, search.msn.com, search.yahoo.com, simpy.com, stumbleupon.com, technorati.com, twitter.com, youtube.com.

Backlinks are a sure way to gain ranking on Google. Here is a new Wordpress plug-in that is worth having and will help you get more backlinks without you having to do any work.

With your Wordpress blog you have an RSS feed just by appending /rss to your blog url ( Here is the one for site-hype http://www.site-hype.com/wordpress/rss ). RSS is great when you like to stay updated on everything that happens on a site. You can use the RSS feeds with the build in functions in Internet Explorer and Firefox or use a web service like Google reader. RSS was originally design for syndication of content i.e. to share content that other can use on their site. And if you have a moderately successful site your RSS feed will be used in this way, either directly or combined with other sources using yahoo pipes or similar services. Chances are people are already scraping your site for content using your RSS feed, lets turn that into an advantage.

RSS footer (http://yoast.com/wordpress/rss-footer/) is a Wordpress plug-in that adds a short footer to each entry in your RSS stream with a link back to your blog. If anyone uses your RSS feed on their site you will get a new backlink to your site without any effort on your part.
