Are you a digg user? Have you noticed what all the top stories have something in common? It’s not a catchy interesting grabbing title, even though that might be the first the comes into your mind.

The one thing that by definition all top stories share on Digg is many votes! Dohh, obvious you might say. That is true by definition. So listen, the fact that a story Had many votes is a big reason the story is one of the top stories.

Let’s take a dive into social psychology.

Have you caught yourself doing something without knowing why? For example, at an airport or trainstation suddenly realising that you are walking without knowing if you are going in the right direction?

Chances are that you are simply following the crowd.

All human beings are programmed to follow the herd. Most of the time this is a good idea, a safe idea. We simply do as others do by default.

Group behaviour plays out on the social sites every day.

Stories with many votes get even more eyes since we looks at what others do. These stories get more votes simply because humans follows the group.

This idea is exploited and amplified by the social sites.

You can and should use this knowledge to your own advantage.

You need to do what you can do to get your story its initial votes. An small initial effort might do a huge difference in the end.

So here are a few practical directions to get your vital initial votes:

Focus on few higher quality postings instead of many low quality posts.

Focus on a few selected social sites and do manual submission, get it right.

Tweak the submissions description to the audience of the social site

Use your personal friends and ask them to help you

Encourage people in your text to vote for it

Use Site-Hype : social traffic tool to get more initial votes and comments

Ask your Twitter followers to vote for your story.

I have been outsourcing my social bookmarking tasks for the last year to a company in India.

There are two big reasons outsourcing socialbookmarking is a good idea. First of all it gets done, and second, I can focus on building my business and creating original content for promotion.

Lately I have had my workers use the site-hyping software to do the bookmarking for me. I wanted to have some people who really spend time using the software and it gave me a chance to see if the instruction and software was easy enough to use. And since they work for me I get excellent feedback and can track what gets done and what works.

When you outsource it is always a good idea to create easy to follow step by step lists. Creating a step by step list forces you to really think through what you want done. It is very easy to blame the outsource company for not completing the task the way you wanted it done. But, did you really make it absolutely clear what you wanted done? Really?

For my outsourcing company I created two step by step documents for using site-hype. These are the tasks I want done on a weekly basis. First they had to create the account and add them to the software. Each week I provide the url I want worked on and they follow the written instructions.

The tagging document is for doing the tagging of submitted sites to earn credits in the site-hype system.

The submit document is for doing the actual bookmarking.

Feel free to look at the documents and model for your own outsourced tasks or to use if you want to use the site-hype software with your tasks.
We are working hard on setting up a package where you can get the outsourcing together with the site-hype software.

Yesterday Google added a new gadget to iGoogle for social voting similar to Digg and Propeller.

iGoogle is the customizable version of the Google start page. You can access iGoogle directly here and you can also set it as your default Google start page.

Add googles digg like widget

You can then customize your iGoogle start page from a range of widgets all listed in an easy to use gallery, nothing new with this. The iGoogle service has been available for years but what is new is the new Digg style widget.

You can find the new Digg style widget here:

The widget lets you vote for popular URLs right on your Google start page.
I am quite sure this widget will find a huge number of users in just a few days. Mostly because this is from Google and it will have good exposure right away. Many people, me included, also expect it to influence search results in the future so it’s probably a good idea to get yourself exposed in the lists as quickly as possible.

You submit a new URL by entering the url directly in the gadget and you can do your voting there as well.

igoogle whats popular

When you have installed the widget you see a front page with the currently top voted stories. You have one tab listing your votes and one tab listing what URLs you have added.

It will be very interesting to see what Google is going to do with this and if this is going to have any impact on the search results returned by Google. This might also just be a move to acquire one of the major social media sites, only time will tell.

You use a search engine when you know what you are looking for. You need a starting point, a keyword or phrase. In the old days of internet this was also the way to surf. You just entered a random word and then hopped on the virtual surf board at random and continued to click links.

In their minds

From a mindset perspective, there is a huge difference between Search and Surf. When searching you let your brain do part of the work and then the search engine take care of the rest. When surfing you don’t want to think before you get results back. Surfing needs a more tailored tool than a search engine and here enters Social bookmarking.
You are offered content via the behavior and thinking that others have done for you. In social bookmarking you also have the option to share your ideas, comments and favorites back to the community, basically do some thinking for others.

The starting point of web sessions with no other agenda than killing time has for this reason shifted from the search engines, like Google, Yahoo and MSN to social bookmarking sites like Stumbleupon, Reddit and Mixx. This is where casual surfers find the cool new stuff, blogs and trends.

The reason for writing this blogpost is to point out the importance of existing in the Social bookmarking world. This is where you have the opportunity to tell the casual surfer what she should focus her attention on.

Twitter has really exploded this year into the mainstream. Now just about every celebrity has their own profiles and most have some one their staff to update it for them. New applications for Twitter are born every day.

If you are like me and have a few followers you are probably noticing that your inbox is starting to fill up with spam messages?

Twitter is the new email and I predict that it won’t be long until we see applications to filter Twitter spam and spammers. And just as with emails, spammers and people who want to reach a large number of people with shady messages are working hard on finding new ways to beat the system.

So why not stay one step ahead and check out a less known but good working alternatives to Twitter.

Plurk is a micro blogging service where you, just as with Twitter, can write 140 character messages. In the 140 character you don’t have to include the context of your message but you select the context from a dropdown menu. A context can be for example be “sitehype is” or “sitehype likes” for my sitehype Plurk user. Your Plurks are displayed on a time-line in chronological order.

Plurk has a Karma concept that is basically a point system design to award activity on Plurk. When you update your status your karma will increase as well as if you do other things with the service. If you do nothing with the service your karma will decrease.

One more interesting feature is Plurks integration with Twitter, Facebook and some other social bookmarking sites. You can for example update your Twitter and Facebook status automatically when you update your Plurk status.

To get you started quickly with Plurk you can import your Twitter friends (set your accounts on the “plurk on other networks” page accessible from “My account” ).
